Arts and Multiculturalism Minister Winston "Gypsy" Peters believes if in 100 years Woodbrook can be transformed from a sugar estate to a modern flourishing community, so too can the nation. He was speaking at a ceremony to unveil the plaque to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Woodbrook at Siegert Square on Monday. The event was organised by the Woodbrook Community Association (WCA)."If Woodbrook can take 100 years and turn a sugar estate into what we have here today, if we carefully manage nature, then we too can do this and in the next 100 years time."It is not only because of the history of this wonderful project, but in a lot of ways it is in front of us and this will serve as a reminder to all and sundry that we must take care of what is ours," Peters said.He said the world today was much different to 100 years ago, and was one in which people were not as respectful of things, and didn't give much care for how things got here because they were so far removed from it.
"The people of our generation, we are still in a lot of ways closer to the things that brought us to where we are today than the younger generation," he said."It is incumbent upon us to teach them exactly what they have to do with what we are doing here today." Also present at the ceremony were Port-of-Spain deputy mayor Keiron Valentine, Woodbrook councillor Cleveland Garcia, WCA chairman David Cameron, WCA vice-chairman Dominic Pierre-Louis, historian Enrico Rajah, manager Corporate Communications Angostura Giselle La Ronde-West and CEO Angostura Wayne Yip Choy.
