If you think there is anything to make David Williams (Happy) sad, forget it. Give him the standing bass pen and paper and leave him alone, David is happy in his world of music. An accomplished baggiest and composer, David is trini to the marrow, forget bone. His love for his native land and pan knows no bound. He was a former Invaders standout. A few years he made a foray into the world of the pan song composing. He released songs, clothed in a different armour, far removed from the mundane. His story telling was sweet like Caroni brown sugar. Song like Happy Story (2000), Ping Pong Obsessions, Keep the Master In Mind (2001), The Prize (2003), The Spirit (2004) The Master (2005) and They Jammin (2006).
Pan lovers began asking where's Happy? Why did Happy leave the arena? Lack of airplay? No! He found himself getting caught up in a competitive environment, and certain behaviours made him feel unwelcome. "It just wasn't making sense," Happy said. Added to that the quality of the songs were lacking and there was this "wash your feet and jump in" culture that pervaded the atmosphere. He points to the Panorama, and its need for excellence in judging and music. He feels that Len Sharpe (Boogsie) has come down from his creative throne and is not involved in the Panorama hustle. "Look at Boogsie's music now and compare it to long ago and you would see the difference," he advised.
Although he's happy, the pan song mill is rolling along with young composers he wants to see more quality songs. "Pan songs have no life after Carnival," he said and people cannot identify with them on the international market." In the mean time Happy is happy playing his jazz music. He has just completed gigs at the Lincoln Centre, and is moving on to Nantucket Island for more performances.
However, he couldn't resist the urge to pelt a clout at Panorama judges. "They don't know anything about pan music. "If you beat them on the head with a brilliant composition, it breaks my heart to say it, but its the truth, they won't know the difference," he signed off.
