Two Form Three students of the San Fernando West Government Secondary School were taken to hospital on Monday after an alleged brutal assault at the hands of a schoolmate. Police have since detained a 14-year- old student in connection with the beating. Reports stated that 14-year-old Pleasantville teenager Keanu Achong was in a critical condition at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital at the neurology ward. Another girl, Shanna Williams, was receiving treatment for a fractured jaw at the San Fernando General Hospital. Police said that around 10.45 am, during the recess period, both Achong and Williams were in the cafeteria area of the school.
A 14-year-old student approached Achong to inquire about a girl and an argument followed. During the altercation, the suspect picked up a piece of wood and beat Achong. Achong fell to the ground. Williams attempted the part the fight but was punched in the jaw by the suspect. Officials of the school had to rush in to quell the fight. Achong and Williams were taken to hospital. Sources said when Achong was struck with the object, a large wound on his head opened up. The incident has prompted police to make several patrols around the school between 2.30 pm and 3.30 pm. WPC Dyer of the San Fernando Station is continuing investigations.
