Two Form Three stu­dents of the San Fer­nan­do West Gov­ern­ment Sec­ondary School were tak­en to hos­pi­tal on Mon­day af­ter an al­leged bru­tal as­sault at the hands of a school­mate. Po­lice have since de­tained a 14-year- old stu­dent in con­nec­tion with the beat­ing. Re­ports stat­ed that 14-year-old Pleas­antville teenag­er Keanu Achong was in a crit­i­cal con­di­tion at the Port-of-Spain Gen­er­al Hos­pi­tal at the neu­rol­o­gy ward. An­oth­er girl, Shan­na Williams, was re­ceiv­ing treat­ment for a frac­tured jaw at the San Fer­nan­do Gen­er­al Hos­pi­tal. Po­lice said that around 10.45 am, dur­ing the re­cess pe­ri­od, both Achong and Williams were in the cafe­te­ria area of the school.

A 14-year-old stu­dent ap­proached Achong to in­quire about a girl and an ar­gu­ment fol­lowed. Dur­ing the al­ter­ca­tion, the sus­pect picked up a piece of wood and beat Achong. Achong fell to the ground. Williams at­tempt­ed the part the fight but was punched in the jaw by the sus­pect. Of­fi­cials of the school had to rush in to quell the fight. Achong and Williams were tak­en to hos­pi­tal. Sources said when Achong was struck with the ob­ject, a large wound on his head opened up. The in­ci­dent has prompt­ed po­lice to make sev­er­al pa­trols around the school be­tween 2.30 pm and 3.30 pm. WPC Dy­er of the San Fer­nan­do Sta­tion is con­tin­u­ing in­ves­ti­ga­tions.
