National batsman Justin Guillen copped the Cricketer of the Year award at Queen's Park Cricket Club 2011 awards function held on Wednesday night at the Queen's Park Oval.Guillen who was recently chosen on the T&T T20 squad, replacing Daren Ganga, was captain of QPCC during the 2011 season and led them to all three titles.A stylish opening batsman, Guillen averaged 40.00 and in all three competitions scored a total of 719 runs. He produced two brilliant centuries against Central Sports 169 and Moosai 101. His 89 against Clarke Road in the T20 competition and his 45 in the finals against PowerGen showed his prowess at the T20 level.This was one of the highlights of the club's presentation, which was held in the distinguished presence of His Excellency, president George Maxwell Richards and his wife, Dr Jean Ramjohn-Richards, members of the Diplomatic corps and a large gathering of club members.
The Youth Cricketer of the Year was national player Akeal Hosein, who scored 556 runs in the three competitions. He also captured 15 wickets with his left arm orthodox spin. Hosein also represented the West Indies youth team on a tour of India.The Squash Player of the Year award went to Kale Wilson who won the National and Caribbean Under 19 championship. The top junior squash player was Charlotte Knaggs, the Caribbean Under 17 champion. She was fifth in the Ontario Gold event and followed up with a quarterfinal appearance in the Canadian Junior Open tournament. She topped her squash performance with her scholastic efforts with the Squash Scholar Athlete Challenge Trophy for 2011.
Footballer of the Year went to Jason Devenish whose technical skill, creativity and ability to get into the opponents box to score made him the coaches choice for the player of the year. The junior award in football was collected by Keegan Rattan.Darren Cowie after a steady season took the hockey title. The Parkites captain led T&T to the Pan Am games and returned to Trinidad to led QPCC to a strong showing both indoors and outdoors.Meanwhile, Anton Gopaulsingh was recognised for his untiring efforts in promoting the quality of the club's squash committee and the general membership sub-committee.This is in addition to his extremely heavy professional commitments.
