Remember, too, that according to Anglican priest Reverend Shelley-Ann Tenia, a Lenten fast can in good conscience be broken on Sundays-no matter what you're abstaining from. As a matter of fact, many traditionalist Jews believe that sex on the Sabbath (in their case, Saturday) is especially pleasing to God, who commanded them to be joyful on the Sabbath. And what could be more joyful than sex on a lazy Sunday afternoon? One young wife expressed surprise at the idea of breaking a fast on a Sunday, and says she wishes she'd known that two years ago when she and her husband tried and failed to keep their hands off each other for 40 days and 40 nights. "We kind of slipped up near the end. A few times, actually. And every time I felt upset and angry at myself, and sorry to say, I took it out on him." Fr Charles isn't worried about such slip-ups. If you do stumble on your fast, he explains, you just get right up and keep on going. In the end, Lenten fasting or abstinence isn't just about penance and sacrifice. It's also about development and growth. No matter what you choose to deny yourself, whatever you abstain from, when the Lenten fast gives way to the Easter feast you want to come out on the other side stronger as individuals and as a couple. So hang in there, and make it mean something.
