Thousands of music lovers converged on the Centre of Excellence on Saturday night for the highly anticipated I Am the Music Boss – Diamond Edition, a production that once again underscored the enduring appeal of chutney and Bollywood fusion on the local entertainment stage.
Patrons began streaming into the venue as early as 6 pm, setting the tone for an evening charged with anticipation and nostalgia. By the time the show officially began after 8 pm, the atmosphere had transformed into a vibrant celebration of music and culture.
The opening segment featured energetic performances from Veeijay Ramkissoon and Vaibhav Gupta, the latter making his debut appearance in Trinidad and Tobago. Gupta, fresh off his victory on Indian Idol, quickly won over the audience with a series of popular hits, his powerful vocals drawing loud applause and setting a high standard for the night.
However, the spotlight firmly remained on chutney icon Raymond Ramnarine, who has been the driving force behind the show for more than three decades. Dressed in a striking white kurta and turban, Ramnarine delivered a commanding performance, paying tribute to legendary playback singer Kishore Kumar with a selection of timeless Bollywood classics. His seamless, non-stop set kept patrons fully engaged, highlighting both his stamina and deep connection to the music.
Among the evening’s standout moments was a duet with local artiste Rehanna Gopaul, which added a dynamic layer to the show. Another strong showing came from Arvind Ramnarine—Raymond’s nephew—who impressed with his delivery of crowd favourites and further demonstrated the family’s musical legacy.
The second half of the concert lifted the energy even further, as Ramnarine shifted into a lively blend of Baitak Gana-style performances. Standing and playing the harmonium, he was backed by a fusion of traditional instruments such as the dhantal and dholak alongside modern accompaniments, creating a rich, rhythmic sound that resonated deeply with the audience.
As the tempo increased, scores of patrons surged toward the front of the stage, dancing and celebrating well into the night. The electrifying finale ultimately proved to be the defining segment of the show, capturing the spirit of unity and joy that has made I Am the Music Boss a staple on Trinidad and Tobago’s cultural calendar for over 30 years.
