For Sangre Grande-born singer and songwriter Coutain, the journey from T&T’s vibrant music scene to international recognition has entered an exciting new chapter.
The artiste, born Denzil Coutain, has been named Billboard’s Caribbean Up-And-Comer for September 2026, marking a significant milestone in a career that has steadily gained momentum since he released his debut single, African Dancer, in 2019.
In its September feature, Billboard highlights Coutain’s ability to breathe new life into Trinidadian classics while maintaining a sound that is distinctly his own. With smooth, soulful vocals and smart songwriting, the artist moves comfortably between soca, dancehall, reggae and R&B, refusing to be confined to a single genre.
That versatility has been reflected throughout his growing catalogue, which includes Product of Big Blood (2020), G Syde Tape, Pt. 3 with Brooklyn Decent (2022), and 1996 (2024).
More recently, Coutain has been building a creative partnership with producer Michael “Tano” Montano. The pair first collaborated on Junction in 2024 before returning with Jamtown in 2025.
The latter has become one of Coutain’s notable recent successes, accumulating nearly two million official on-demand US streams, according to Luminate.
But for Coutain, looking forward also means looking back.
His December 2025 release, Wedding Band, is a contemporary reimagining of Mighty Sparrow’s classic Mr. Walker. The track brings together elements of calypso’s social commentary and soca’s infectious energy, reflecting Coutain’s interest in honouring Trinidad and Tobago’s musical heritage while giving it a modern interpretation.
That balance between tradition and innovation has become central to his artistic identity.
“I’m excited, grateful and extremely proud to have the opportunity to represent Trinidad and Tobago internationally,” Coutain told Billboard. “I am placing my trust in God’s guidance and focusing on giving my very best.”
His Billboard recognition follows a particularly significant year.
During summer 2026, Coutain joined Kes the Band in Europe as an opening act on its Roots, Rock, Soca Tour, giving him the opportunity to perform for audiences beyond the Caribbean and gain experience on a major international stage.
He has also earned three nominations at the 2026 Caribbean Music Awards, including a nomination for Best New Soca Artiste.
For an artiste whose music is deeply connected to his Caribbean identity, the recognition carries significance beyond career advancement.
Coutain says one of his long-term goals is to help create opportunities for those coming behind him and to demonstrate the breadth of talent that exists within the region.
“A long-term goal for me is to reach a place where I could help the next generation and show the world that the Caribbean has so much to offer,” he told Billboard. “We have stars living right here.”
His rising profile places him alongside a new generation of Caribbean and international artists who are expanding the reach of regional sounds.
Also featured by Billboard in September is Los Angeles rapper AZ Chike, named the publication’s Hip Hop Up-And-Comer. AZ Chike has attracted significant attention through his appearance on Kendrick Lamar’s Peekaboo, from Lamar’s acclaimed GNX album. The track gained additional exposure when Lamar performed it during his Apple Music Super Bowl LIX halftime show in February 2025.
For Coutain, however, the next destination is already taking shape.
He is currently developing his debut solo studio album, which is expected to arrive following Trinidad Carnival 2027. The project will mark another chapter in an artistic journey that has continued to evolve without being restricted by genre.
From Sangre Grande to stages across Europe and now the pages of Billboard, Coutain is steadily carving out his place in the next generation of Caribbean music.
And if his journey so far is any indication, he is only getting started.
