Pupils of Gandhi Memorial Vedic School enthusiastically celebrated World Read Aloud Day with guest readers.

This occasion is dedicated not only to the act of reading but also to the art of reading aloud.

Long before the advent of writing, stories were transmitted orally from one generation to the next. Oral storytelling served as the earliest means of preserving human knowledge, insights, and creativity.

This day serves to revive this tradition in reading while fostering literacy. This initiative aligns with the school’s dedication to delivering a high-quality education to its students.

Author Mary Cuffy engaged the young children by reading from her book, “Lola and the Magic Sticks”. This story introduces children to the national instrument, captivating them as Ms Gora the grasshopper and Mr Bola the beetle educate the ladybugs about the steelpan.

The children were enthralled, humming and dancing along as they learnt to play the alphabet song with Lola. The presentation effectively captivated the audience by seamlessly integrating music into the realm of literacy.

Literacy serves as a fundamental instrument for the development of a more prosperous nation.

The students at Gandhi Memorial Vedic School provided Guardian Kids with a glimpse of their World Read Aloud Day activities.

Some of the pupils who took part were Alice Mohammed, Shivan Sam, Aryan Ramnanan, Sumayya Razack, Nandi Sarran, and Chloe Deosingh.

This is what the children had to say:

Nandi Sarran, “I like the story because I like the steelpan.”

Alice Mohammed, “I love the steelpan and the magic sticks.”

Sumayya Razack, “I love the cute ladybugs from the story.”

Mary Cuffy is an educator and local children’s author. Ms Cuffy is the author of the Ladybug book series. Ms Cuffy believes the best investment we can make in children is in the early years. Email: mary.cuffy@yahoo.com • IG: marycuffy • FB: mary cuffy/Lola and the Dancing Ladybug

During my consultation with Ms Brafit CEO Nicole Joseph-Chin, what was supposed to be a simple mastectomy bra fitting became something much deeper. Her thoughtful questions unlocked emotions I didn’t even realise I was holding in. She comforted, reassured, and helped me face the truth of what was coming. That bra wasn’t just clothing—it was the first real symbol of life after surgery.
