Iëre X Taba­go: A Choral Ju­bilee, a con­cert held in cel­e­bra­tion of T&T’s 60th An­niver­sary of In­de­pen­dence, took place Ju­ly 31 at NA­PA in Port-of-Spain

Based on names giv­en to T&T by the First Peo­ple com­mu­ni­ty, “Iëre” (the land of the hum­ming bird) and “Taba­go” (the first place to rest), the con­cert show­cased five choral en­sem­bles ac­com­pa­nied by the steel­pan and oth­er per­cus­sive in­stru­ments. It was a cel­e­bra­tion of T&T’s his­to­ry from pre-colo­nial­ism to post in­de­pen­dence and be­yond aimed at re­in­forc­ing na­tion­al pride and re­vi­tal­is­ing hope as the coun­try cel­e­brates its Di­a­mond Ju­bilee.

Bish­op Anstey High School Choir, BP Mar­i­onettes Chorale, The Ly­di­an Singers, Eh Bi­en Oui Don Don, Sig­nal Hill Alum­ni and UWI Arts Steel, were each al­lo­cat­ed 15 minute sets to per­form reper­toire in align­ment with folk, tra­di­tion­al spir­i­tu­al, ca­lyp­so, so­ca, and pa­tri­ot­ic gen­res all wo­ven to­geth­er by nar­ra­tion. To close off each half of the event, two joint choral pieces per­formed.

Na­talia Dop­well and Vic­to­ria Grif­fith were fea­tured as so­lo per­form­ers.
