Attorney Israel Khan, SC, was honoured by the Aneal Rajah Windball Cricket League during a gala event at the St Augustine South Recreation Ground recently.
Khan was lauded by the club and Minister of Rural Development and Local Government Khadijah Ameen for his contribution and service to the community over the years, before being presented with a Street Recognition Award.
The award recognised the fact that the street where the cricket league activity is based, Israel B Khan Extension Street, bears the senior lawyer’s name.
The plaque read: “The street is named in honour of Israel B. Khan SC for his lifelong dedication to public service, outstanding achievements and significant contributions to the betterment of our community and country. May this street serve as a lasting tribute to his legacy.”
This is the second community honour Khan, who was awarded “silk” in 2000 and has been practising at the Criminal Bar for the past 45 years, has received in recent months.
Last year, two streets in Monte Grande, St Augustine, were renamed after Khan by the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation (TPRC).
This came after Monte Grande residents petitioned the TPRC in 2023 to rename Deenah Street to Israel B Khan Street and Ganga Street to Israel B Khan Extension Street, in recognition of Khan’s contributions to the development of the criminal justice system in T&T over the past few decades.
The resolution was unanimously accepted by the TPRC, Gazetted on June 11, 2024. The unveiling ceremony took place on October 3 and was witnessed by corporation council members, residents who petitioned the corporation, Khan and his family.
Apart from his career in the legal fraternity, Khan also served as alderman in TPRC from 1987-1991 and is an avid supporter of the steelpan movement.
He has been a tutor at the Hugh Wooding Law School for the past 36 years and is currently president of the Criminal Bar Association.
