At just a young age, Mikhaela Browne is proving that one person’s creativity can ignite a movement for change. Appointed a Child Rights Ambassador by the Ministry of Gender and Child Affairs at the Office of the Prime Minister on February 2, 2024, Mikhaela embraced her mandate with passion, channelling her love for art into a powerful tool for advocacy.
Determined to make children’s rights accessible and fun, Mikhaela wrote and illustrated Simon Needs a Shelter: A Child Rights Story, now available on Amazon. In this heartfelt tale, young Simon faces life on the streets, deprived of shelter, proper nutrition, and safety amid violence, until he’s heroically rescued by the fearless Captain Child Rights. This caped crusader champions the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, ensuring every child knows their inherent protections. Mikhaela’s groundbreaking work earned her First Author recognition from Nalis in 2025, a testament to her visionary storytelling.
But Mikhaela didn’t stop at the page. Captain Child Rights sprang to life as a vibrant puppet, joining forces with Mikhaela on her dynamic social media platform, Art for Advocacy. Together, they tackle vital issues like the right to play, freedom of expression, and protection from harm, reminding children everywhere that their voices matter. “Art is my superpower,” Mikhaela shares. “You don’t have to wait for perfection. Start creating, start advocating, today!”
Her impact extends beyond rights awareness. With her striking artwork, Choose Your Future, Mikhaela launched a nationwide campaign on climate change, exhibiting it at prestigious venues like the Rotunda and various galleries. The initiative’s success propelled her to receive a National Youth Award in 2024, followed by a win in the 2025 Oasis Water Environmental Competition. Her talent shone internationally too, securing 2nd place in the UN Art Competition for World Children’s Day and 3rd in the PTSC Art Competition (Secondary Schools).
Mikhaela’s journey inspires a generation: a young girl from Trinidad and Tobago, armed with crayons and conviction, turning personal passion into national and global change. Her dream? More stages for her and Captain Child Rights to empower the nation’s children with knowledge of their UN Convention rights.
As Mikhaela Browne shows us, heroism isn’t reserved for capes. It’s found in the bold strokes of a brush and the courage to speak up. Young creators, take note: Your art could be the shelter every child needs.
