The SK Dance Academy lit up the Bisram Gopie Auditorium at NCIC Nagar, Chaguanans, recently, with a vibrant celebration of movement, music, and multicultural expression.
The academy’s inaugural concert attracted a full house, with audiences treated to an energetic and emotionally resonant showcase of dance, music and artistic collaboration.
Led by artistic director Seema Suruj-Jardine, the evening featured ten captivating dance pieces performed by a diverse cast of 25 dancers, ranging in age from seven to 40. The programme reflected the academy’s signature blend of classical Indian and modern choreography, brought to life with colour, rhythm, and passion.
Live vocal performances by Kaveesh Maharaj and Veejai Ramkisoon added musical depth to the evening, while hip hop and Latin dance segments by Lisa Mc Intire, Keegan Denny, and the Baielon Dance Academy expanded the concert’s dynamic range and cultural inclusivity.
Founded in 2018, SK Dance Academy began with classes at NCIC Nagar.
Under the guidance of Suruj-Jardine—a classically trained dancer with more than 30 years of experience—the academy has flourished, performing on local and international stages, including in the United States and Chile.
Locally, the group has graced major venues such as the National Academy for the Performing Arts (NAPA), Southern Academy for the Performing Arts (SAPA), Central Bank Auditorium, and Queen’s Hall. It has also been a regular feature at NCIC cultural events.
Speaking after the performance, Suruj-Jardine described the academy as “a dynamic dance group known for its powerful storytelling through a fusion of classical and modern choreography.”
She added that the academy’s mission is to preserve the richness of Indian cultural heritage while re-imagining it in forms that connect with contemporary audiences.
The concert marked a major milestone for the academy—celebrating not only its artistic achievements but also its role in fostering cultural preservation, creativity, and community spirit.
