On the occasion of the United Nations’ International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls, Trinre Insurance stood united with the rest of the world in condemning all forms of violence against women and girls.
In a show of its support for the cause, Trinre made a donation to the Shelter for Battered Women and Children in commemoration of the occasion, which is celebrated on November 25 annually.
In a media release, Trinre said gender-based violence in any form violates fundamental human rights, and the devastating impact is felt not only by the victims but by families, communities, and society.
It said in September 2024, the Office of the Attorney General and the Ministry of Legal Affairs hosted public consultations on domestic violence. It noted that the statistics showed a consistent increase in the number of domestic violence reports over the past five years. Assault by beating stood out as the highest reported offence, with 528 reports made in 2019, 2,646 reports in 2023, and 1,227 as of August 2024. Additionally, T&T has on average 30 domestic violence-related murders per year.
Trinre said these alarming figures underscore the urgent need for action to prevent and respond to gender-based violence. It noted that violence against women and girls takes many forms, including domestic violence, sexual harassment and trafficking. Additionally, in this age of advanced technology, social media has also facilitated various forms of online violence, including cyber harassment and bullying, cyber stalking, online gender-based hate speech, and image-based sexual abuse, which inflicts psychological harm and threatens the safety of women and girls.
Trinre pointed out that United Nations deputy secretary general Amina Mohammed has pointed out that addressing this pervasive issue requires a multi-faceted approach. She further stated that investment in prevention, “means creating conditions where women and girls can thrive, unburdened by the fear of violence.” The company said it is, therefore, everyone’s responsibility to speak out against gender-based violence and demand more from those in authority to save the lives of women and girls.
An important ally in this fight is men, who must hold themselves and their fellow men accountable, Trinre said. They must be role models to young men for healthy emotional expression and champion positive attitudes towards women and girls. With their support, Trinre said T&T stands a greater chance of winning this fight.
Trinre said recognition must also be given to organisations like the Shelter for Battered Women and Children, who, despite their limited resources, continue to provide support and a safe haven to victims.
Trinre’s marketing and customer experience manager, Vinai Narace stated, “Trinre remains firmly committed to providing tangible support to these organisations.”
He added, “We all have a role to play in fostering a culture of respect, equality, and safety for everyone. It is time to move beyond words and take concrete actions that ensure no woman or girl lives in fear of violence.”
