Special Reserve Police Christine Deowah was incarcerated at the Women’s Prison last evening after she was unable to post her $1.5 million bail.
Deowah, 31, was granted bail after appearing in the Point Fortin Magistrates Court on three charges stemming from the disappearance of a firearm and ammunition from the Cedros Police Station last year.
Deowah, who was last assigned to that station, is charged with larceny of a government firearm and ammunition.
The other charge of misbehaviour in public office alleged that as a serving member of the police service, she hid the firearm and ammunition.
The items were allegedly discovered missing from a room in the police station on June 20, 2019.
However, her colleagues carried out a search and eventually found the firearm and ammunition hidden in a derelict vehicle on the station's compound.
Deowah, who has been an officer for six years, was arrested at her Cedros home two Sundays ago.
She was charged by ASP Brian Ramphal.
Prosecutor Sgt Jesse Jitmansingh did not object to bail as she had no previous convictions or pending matters.
However, he asked First Court Senior Magistrate Alicia Chankar to attach conditions to her bail.
The mother of one was represented by attorney Mickey Dindial. The magistrate granted her bail with the registrar of the court approval and also ordered her to surrender her passport. Deowah also has to report to the Point Fortin Police Station twice a week.
The matter was adjourned to today for the prosecutor to produce the firearm and ammunition in court.
