The trade union representing Angostura workers hopes good sense will prevail following the resignation of the company's board earlier this week.
the Seamen and Waterfront Workers’ Trade Union (SWWTU) president, Michael Annisette, could not speak definitively on the reasons behind the board's resignation, but he said ultimately whoever is set to replace the outgoing board should work in the company's best interest.
"Some people say it's a political custom. Some say it's a legal requirement, and you're going to have the different views. But at the end of the day, I think everybody has to do what is the best interest at the company and the corporation. That is my view," said Annisette.
"We will anticipate that there will be a board soon, so that the work at Angostura can go on. We represent workers and our philosophy is to work with any management team that is around in the best interest the company, and, by extension, Trinidad and Tobago."
All six Angostura directors resigned from the company this week. Dr Maryam Abdool-Richards, Gerard Cooper, and Tricia Coosal submitted their resignations on Tuesday while Dr Sterling Frost, Franka Costelloe and chairman Terrence Bharath left on Wednesday.
Annisette said the new board would have to address shareholders, but he was hopeful the new team would keep the workers in the mind while doing their duty.
"At the end of the day, no matter what we pay, we must pay attention to what is in the best interest of the corporation that has to trump any court process. As far as I am concerned, because that is the most important thing. What is in the best interest of the company and then I will call on the government to ensure that we get a board in place as quickly as possible," he said.
