The Central Statistical Office (CSO) reported yesterday there has been a slight decrease in the inflation rate in April, but there was an increase in the price of food and non-alcoholic beverages last month.
In a release announcing the Consumer Price Index for the month of April 2026, the CSO stated, “The inflation rate for April 2026, which measures the percentage change in the All Items Index for the month of April 2026 over April 2025, was 0.4 per cent. This represents a decrease from 0.7 per cent for the previous period (March 2026/March 2025). The inflation rate for the comparative period (April 2025/April 2024) was 1.5%.”
The CSO also noted that based on prices collected in the month, the All Items Index was 125.7, representing a decrease of 0.2 points or 0.2 per cent below the All Items Index for March 2026.
The CSO, however, noted, “The index for food and non-alcoholic beverages increased from 154.6 in March 2026 to 154.8 in April 2026, reflecting an increase of 0.1 per cent. Contributing significantly to this increase was the general upward movement in the prices of fresh whole chicken, cucumber, carrots, parboiled rice, other salted fish, oranges, other chilled or frozen goat, other fruit drinks, tomatoes and pumpkin.”
The release stated, however, the full impact of these price increases was offset by the general decrease in the prices of fresh carite, Irish potatoes, ochroes, fresh king fish, bodi, hot peppers, pimento, melongene, green pigeon peas and cabbage.
