Trinidad and Tobago recorded the sixth-highest total energy supply per capita among countries covered by the Energy Institute in 2025, at 358.2 gigajoules (GJ) per person.
The country ranked ahead of several major energy-producing countries, including Saudi Arabia, Oman, Canada and the United States. Its energy supply per person was 7.3 times the South and Central American average of 48.8 GJ.
Total energy supply per capita is an economy-wide measure rather than an estimate of household consumption.
In the Statistical Review, energy supply comprises commercially traded fuels, including modern renewables used to generate electricity. T&T’s figure declined from 385.7 GJ per person in 2024, representing a decrease of 7.1 per cent.
Even with the reduction, the country retained its position ahead of several larger economies and energy producers.
Natural gas continued to underpin Trinidad and Tobago’s ranking, accounting for approximately 87 per cent of total energy supply in 2025. Oil contributed close to 13 per cent, while renewables represented around 0.1 per cent.
The natural gas component fell from 512.9 million GJ in 2024 to 471 million GJ in 2025, a decline of 8.2 per cent, or 41.9 million GJ.
Small increases in oil and renewable energy partly offset the reduction.
Overall energy supply moved from 0.582 exajoules to 0.541 exajoules. The Energy Institute reported an annual decline of 6.7 per cent, based on growth rates adjusted for leap years.
Maintenance activity affected the domestic energy sector late in 2025.
The Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago reported that work undertaken by key upstream producers contributed to weaker natural gas production during the closing months of the year.
Downstream operations also changed during the period. Nutrien completed a controlled shutdown of its Trinidad Nitrogen operations at Point Lisas in late 2025, citing port access restrictions imposed by the National Energy Corporation and a lack of reliable and economic natural gas supply.
Despite the late-year disruptions, full-year production at Atlantic LNG increased in 2025, marking its first annual gain since 2022.
Full-year upstream production was also broadly stable. Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries data show that average natural gas production edged up by approximately 0.1 per cent between 2024 and 2025.
The stable annual production average means the decline in energy supply per capita cannot be attributed solely to lower upstream output.
Maintenance and changes in gas use across the LNG and petrochemical sectors may have contributed, but the available sources do not provide a complete reconciliation with the Energy Institute’s annual supply estimate.
Population growth had only a marginal effect. Calculations based on the Energy Institute figures indicate an increase of approximately 0.2 per cent between 2024 and 2025.
The movement in energy supply per capita was therefore driven mainly by the reduction in total supply.
Despite the year-on-year decline, T&T maintained its place among the countries with the highest energy supply per person, supported by the scale of its gas-based energy sector relative to its population.
