105 COVID-19 cas­es were record­ed with­in the school sys­tem since the term be­gan last month. The con­fir­ma­tion came from Min­is­ter of Ed­u­ca­tion Dr Nyan Gads­by-Dol­ly to Guardian Me­dia yes­ter­day.

The cas­es come at a time when T&T is at a rel­a­tive­ly more favourable place in the pan­dem­ic. How­ev­er, that's not to say the ef­fects aren't still be­ing felt. The cas­es at schools prompt­ed the Sec­ondary Schools' Foot­ball League to post­pone match­es in its Cen­tral Zone's Boys' Cham­pi­onship di­vi­sion due to cas­es in some of the schools.

The league's pres­i­dent, Merere Louis Gon­za­les told Guardian Me­dia the de­ci­sion was tak­en "out of an abun­dance of cau­tion in or­der to pro­tect the in­tegri­ty of the league and to en­sure the stu­dents are safe guard­ed by mea­sures we are tak­ing."

"We are com­ing out of the COVID-19 pan­dem­ic, we are still in an en­dem­ic stage...that's why the coun­try needs to still be mind­ful per­sons are still be­ing af­fect­ed...," he said

"Even as small as the num­bers are (peo­ple) are still loos­ing their lives. We still recog­nise that the loss of one life is ex­treme­ly im­por­tant and we would like to en­sure that, as a re­spon­si­ble and re­spectable or­gan­i­sa­tion that we in­cul­cate and in­cor­po­rate all the nec­es­sary health and safe­ty pro­to­cols to safe­guard the in­ter­ests, the lives and the lo­gevi­ty of our stu­dents in our schools."

The schools af­fect­ed by the post­pon­ing of the cen­tral di­vi­sion's match­es are Pre­sen­ta­tion Col­lege Ch­agua­nas, Mir­a­cle Min­istries, AS­JA Boys' Col­lege and Cou­va East Sec­ondary. He said the sit­u­a­tion is be­ing mon­i­tored fol­low­ing which a de­ci­sion will be made on the new tim­ing for their games.
