A 66-year-old 1990 in­sur­rec­tion­ist was gunned down in Diego Mar­tin in what po­lice say is a gang-re­lat­ed killing.

Po­lice re­ports stat­ed that at around 11:30 on Fri­day night, Sal­im Muwak­il, who par­tic­i­pat­ed in the 1990 at­tempt­ed coup, was at a home in Green Dri­ve, Diego Mar­tin, when sev­er­al gun­shots were heard.

One of Muwak­il's rel­a­tives lat­er found him ly­ing dead on the ground with sev­er­al gun­shot wounds.

Po­lice said sev­er­al types of am­mu­ni­tion were found at the scene. They al­so said Muwak­il was well known to them.

Muwak­il along with Ja­maat Al-Mus­limeen leader Abu Bakr and 69 oth­ers stormed Trinidad and To­ba­go Tele­vi­sion on Mar­aval Road, Port-of-Spain, on Ju­ly 27, 1990. He was head of se­cu­ri­ty of the Ja­maat at the time. He played an in­stru­men­tal role in the coup as se­cu­ri­ty ex­pert for the Ja­maat.

His son Mo­hammed Muwak­il, of the lo­cal mu­sic group Free­town Col­lec­tive, said his fam­i­ly wants space to grieve, but they will be is­su­ing a state­ment.
