Minister of Homeland Security Roger Alexander has signed three more detention orders under the Emergency Powers Regulations.
The orders were issued for Johnathan “Bushelle” Bushel; Anisha Lisa Raffick, also called Anisha Lawrence; and Denesh “Ratty” Maharaj.
The detention orders were issued between August and October, after Alexander said he was satisfied the detentions were necessary to prevent the individuals from acting in a manner prejudicial to the public safety of T&T.
Bushell, of Jerningham Street, Belmont, was identified as a member of the Alien/7 gang, which was said to be involved in random public shootings and turf wars in the Belmont area. His detention order, made on August 29, states he and others were planning armed attacks and retaliatory shootings linked to recent murders and woundings.
Raffick, of Borde Narve and La Romaine, was detained on September 27 and identified as a member of the R-Gang. She was described as being responsible for the financial and logistical operations of the group, which has access to high-powered firearms and is involved in narcotics trafficking and money laundering. The detention order states she and others were conspiring to expand their territory through planned shootings in public spaces.
Maharaj of St Helena and Piarco, was detained on October 4. The order identifies him as a shooter and enforcer within the Resistance Gang, which is allegedly involved in narcotics and firearms trafficking, extortion, contract killings, and kidnappings. The order states that he and other members were conspiring to perpetrate further acts of armed violence in public spaces.
Under the regulations, detained persons may be held without warrant by police officers and kept in custody at designated facilities, including the Eastern Correctional Rehabilitation Centre in Arima and the Women’s Prison in Arouca.
