Security finds man bullet-riddled body on roadside
Homicide detectives are yet to determine the motive for the murder of a man whose body was found on the roadside in Barrackpore yesterday.
Crime Scene Investigators recovered a national identification card on the body which belonged to one Khanta Ramdass, 43. Police were still working to confirm the identity of the body and find the victim’s address by yesterday evening.
A report stated that Heritage Security contacted the Barrackpore and Penal police stations around 5.15 am and reported seeing the body of a man lying motionless at the side of Mud Plant Road, off Wilson Road, Barrackpore.
Penal constables Persad and Jaglal responded to the scene, meeting Heritage Security personnel and two Amalgamated Security Services Ltd (ASSL) estate constables. The ASSL constables reported they were on mobile patrol duty at 5 am in a marked company vehicle. As they drove along Mud Plant Road, they noticed the body in some bushes at the side of the roadway. The two officers said they contacted their supervisor, who then contacted the police.
Investigators said the body lay on its stomach and had several gunshot wounds. PC Ramoutar and WPC Valdez from the Homicide Bureau of Investigations: Region Three and Crime Scene Unit collected six 9mm spent shells, one projectile, one empty brown wallet, and one brown wallet containing the identification card. They also bagged the victim’s hand to aid in further identification.
District Medical Officer Dr Daniel examined the body, and undertakers took it to the San Fernando General Hospital mortuary for keeping until a transfer to the Forensic Science Centre, St James, for an autopsy.
Speaking at her home in Barrackpore, Ramdass’ sister, Vashti Toolsie, said she was in the yard when police arrived at her brother’s home around 8 am. Toolsie asked why they were looking for Ramadass, thinking there was a minor issue, but news of her brother’s death followed.
She struggled to contain her emotions as she recalled walking to the scene with her son and husband and seeing Ramdass’ blood.
“I do not know who wanted to kill him. My brother never did anything wrong. He was always hardworking and never in anybody’s way,” Toolsie said.
She admitted that Ramdass, a construction worker, smoked drugs but never sold them. Toolsie said he was a loving and helpful man who never stole from anyone. Toolsie last saw him around 10 am Friday when she called him over for a meal of dasheen and chicken. Her son saw him around 7 pm on Friday. No one had seen him since, and calls to his phone went unanswered.
Toolsie pleaded with her brother’s killer: “Put down the gun, please. Do not do that. You do not give people life, so do not kill people.”
She warned that God was seeing everything they do.
