Two-time Olympian cy­clist Njisane Phillip has been grant­ed $300,000 bail and a cash al­ter­na­tive of $30,000 on firearm and mar­i­jua­na charges.

Phillip ap­peared vir­tu­al­ly be­fore Se­nior Mag­is­trate Armi­na De­onar­ins­ingh in the San Fer­nan­do Charge Court on three charges in­clud­ing Pos­ses­sion of a firearm, Pos­ses­sion of am­mu­ni­tion and Pos­ses­sion of mar­i­ju­na. He was not called up­on to plead to the charges. Phillip was or­dered to sur­ren­der his Trinidad and To­ba­go and Unit­ed States pass­ports and re­port to the Siparia Po­lice Sta­tion every Wednes­day as con­di­tions of his bail. He was rep­re­sent­ed by at­tor­ney Cedric Nep­tune.

Phillip was ar­rest­ed around 5 pm on Sat­ur­day af­ter po­lice stopped a black Toy­ota Hilux he was dri­ving along the Solomon Ho­choy High­way near Gand­hi Vil­lage in Debe. It is al­leged that he was speed­ing.

While in­ter­view­ing him, the of­fi­cer al­leged­ly got a strong scent of mar­i­jua­na com­ing from the ve­hi­cle. When the of­fi­cers searched the ve­hi­cle, it is al­leged that they found 62 grammes of mar­i­jua­na and a firearm with an ex­tend­ed mag­a­zine, con­tain­ing four rounds of 9 mm am­mu­ni­tion. Phillip of Siparia was ar­rest­ed and tak­en to the South High­way Pa­trol Unit in Debe where he was charged by PC Sankar. The mat­ter was ad­journed to April 24.
