Tobago was hit with 48 reported landslides from Wednesday into Thursday.
Alan Stewart, head of the Tobago Emergency Management Authority, told Guardian Media that the hardest hit areas were in eastern Tobago and along the Northside Road. Around noon yesterday, a huge landslide occurred in the Craig Hall area.
Stewart said TEMA had teams strategically placed throughout the island to deal with blocked roads caused by landslides and falling trees.
Along the Plymouth Road, several landslides occurred. A woodwork shop suffered some damage shortly after midday, when trees and rocks collapsed on the side of a hill and fell.
The sides of the roadway, along Plymouth Road nearer to Scarborough, caved into a river. At Whim Avenue, the hillside washed into a river.
Residents said they were unsure as to how long the roadway would last and how safe an electricity pole was, since it was on the edge of the precipice after the landslide.
THA Secretary of Infrastructure Trevor James said he was doing a general assessment of the damage done on the island.
Other reports coming in were that the road at Turtle Beach, near the Starfish Hotel, was completely flooded and impassable, the roadway was blocked at Big Hole, Goodwood due to a landslide; Roxborough/Betsy’s Hope Main Road was completely blocked off due to a landslide but later cleared for one way traffic and the Belle Garden roadway, which was blocked off due to a landslide, was also cleared to allow one-way traffic. Belle Garden had a fallen tree causing the road to be impassable.
