RHONDOR DOWLAT-ROSTANT
The fifth prison escapee, Anthony Seepersad, who was recaptured three days after escaping from the Golden Grove Prison in Arouca, has pleaded not guilty to the charge of escaping lawful custody.
Seepersad would have been charged and brought before magistrate Brambhanan Dubay in the Arima Magistrates First Court, either on the 24th or 25th March, 2022.
Seepersad, 28, was found and detained in St James by officers of the Inter-Agency Task Force at about 11:10 am on March 23rd. He was arrested along with another man, believed to be a relative.
Seepersad and the other man were taken to the Maraval Police Station and subsequently to the Arouca Police Station, where the escapee was charged with escaping lawful custody.
He pleaded not guilty during his court appearance and is due to reappear on April 21st.
Seepersad, along with four other prisoners, escaped the Golden Grove Prison in Arouca on March 20th.
Kurien Douglas, 25, and Shaquille Drayton, 30, were recaptured at about 7:45 pm and 8:20 pm in Dinsley and Tacarigua, respectively, on March 21st.
Theon Thomas, 23, was recaptured at about 4:30 pm on March 21st at a house in Mt D’Or, while Kevin Jagdeo, 32, was recaptured in the Trincity area shortly after his escape on March 23rd.
The other four recaptured prisoners appeared before Magistrate Brambhanan Dubay in the Arima Magistrates First Court on March 22nd, where they pled guilty to the charge of escaping lawful custody.
All four men were each sentenced to two years and eight months of hard labour, in addition to the time they currently are serving.
The five prisoners escaped from the Golden Grove Prison at about 10:30 pm on March 20th. They had climbed through a space they had pried open through the galvanize roofing of a dormitory cell.
Prison officers had heard a noise from the southern side of the dormitory, and upon checking saw that the BRC wire had been cut and the galvanize raised, and discovered five of the ten inmates housed in the cell were missing.
