Seven people were left homeless after a fire destroyed their house in San Juan on Monday night.
The occupants of the house were identified as: Michael Hosten (owner), Dale, Daryle & Sarah Hosten, Hamilton and Alyssa Wilson and Arya Phillip.
According to a report, at 8.05 pm a fire broke out at the two-storey house at Plata #2, Bagatelle Road off Saddle Road, San Juan.
Fire officials said the house was well-alight in the lower level of the house when they arrived.
That area housed the family’s kitchen, television room, store room and two bedrooms, which were completely destroyed. Fire appliances from the San Juan, Wrightson Road and Woodbrook Fire Stations responded but we’re unable to extinguish the flame in time.
A cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
Hosten said he believed the fire was caused by a water pump which he said was “shorting.”
“I am grateful that no one was hurt. The fire was caused by a water pump short, yeah, I think so.”
Hosten said he lived downstairs the home with his wife and three grandchildren, ages 11, nine and one-year-old.
“It was me alone at the time and my son. I will see if I could get any grants because I need help, “ Hosten said.
In the interim, Hosten said the children were taken in to stay by relatives of Edinburgh 500 in Chaguanas.
Hosten estimated the damage to be around $400,000.
Fire Prevention officers are expected to return to the scene for processing. Any one wishing to assist the fire victims can contact Hosten at 353-3037.
