Trinidad and Tobago national Dr Everold Hosein completed his 40th consecutive New York City Marathon this past Sunday. He is 80 years old, and this marks his ninth marathon since a heart attack nine years ago. Hosein is a Distinguished Scholar at City University of New York/School of Public Health.
He said he beat a few younger runners and nine octogenarians.
Nine years ago, Dr Hosein experienced a heart attack with no dramatic symptoms a few days after running the 2016 New York City Marathon. His heart rate was low, and he experienced frequent shortness of breath. He was later diagnosed with a heart attack and received a stent and a pacemaker. He returned to the marathon a year later, finishing with one of his slowest times.
Hosein advised heart attack survivors to continue exercising and consult with their doctor. He said daily physical activity was important and recommended walking 30 minutes per day in any combination to improve cardiovascular health, prevent diabetes, and support mental health.
Asked about his time for the marathon, Hosein declined to give specifics but noted it was one of his slowest. He attributed challenges to bowel movements and caffeine gels during the race. He said the crowds were great and the weather was favourable for running.
He continues to encourage physical activity for people of all ages, emphasising the health benefits of regular exercise even outside of competitive events.
