A husband and wife were shot, chopped and wounded by celery thieves who invaded their home at Aranguez, on Wednesday night.

According to a police report, at about 10 pm, the 48-year-old man and his 52-yeat-old wife were at a makeshift galvanize shed in their garden located off Samaroo Road in Aranguez, when they were awakened by five men attempting to steal their celery crop.  All the suspects were dressed in black with masks covering their faces. The man, police said, confronted the thieves and a scuffle ensued. One of the suspects who was armed with a firearm shot him in the left side of the abdomen.

Seeing her husband shot, the woman attempted to hide under a bed while one of the suspects kept chopping the galvanize in the shed from the outside with a cutlass. The cutlass, police said, bored through the galvanize to where the woman was hiding, chopping and wounding her behind the neck.

The men then left the area.

The couple was taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex by officers of the North-Eastern Division and Emergency Response Patrol, where they were treated and warded. Both are said to be in stable condition.
