The Anjuman Sunnat ul Jamaat Association (ASJA) has advised that Muslims should look for the new moon on the evening of Sunday 1 May 2022, to mark the observance of Eid-ul-Fitr on Monday 2 May 2022.
The confirmation came in an advisory issued by Imam Raffaic Mohamed, ASJA’s Public Relations Officer, and Imam of the Macoon Street ASJA Jamaat.
According to the release, the birth of the new moon should have begun at 4:28 pm today, Saturday 30 April 2022. However, in the event this does not occur, Imam Mohamed indicates that Eid will be observed instead on Tuesday 3 May 2022.
Imam Mohamed explains in the advisory…
“The birth of the new moon will take place this evening at 4:28 pm, the 28th day of Ramadan. It is therefore advised to look for the new moon tomorrow evening (Sunday, May 1st) as the moon will be 25 hours 55 minutes old at sunset (In sha Allah).
If the moon is sighted, then the month of Shawwaal will commence at sunset and accordingly, the first day of the new Islamic month will occur on Monday, 2nd May 2022—the day of Eid-ul-Fitr (In sha Allah).
If the moon is not sighted, then the month of Ramadan will complete its thirtieth day on Monday, 2nd May 2022. As a consequence, the new Islamic month of Shawwaal will commence at sunset, with the first day of the new Islamic month occurring on Tuesday, 3rd May 2022—the day of Eid-ul-Fitr (In sha Allah).”
