An autopsy has confirmed that Barrackpore resident Merril Sabessar was beaten and strangled, but investigators say they have not yet identified a suspect in her killing.
Police said no one has been detained in connection with the 65-year-old woman’s death, and her missing Nissan Tiida sedan has not been recovered.
Post-mortem results from the Forensic Science Centre revealed that Sabessar died from multiple blunt force injuries and manual strangulation.
Sabessar was found dead inside her ransacked home along Papourie Road on January 25, in what police believe was a home invasion.
Relatives discovered her body around 1.30 pm after repeated attempts to contact her by cellphone went unanswered.
A relative became concerned and asked her husband to check on Sabessar.
When he arrived at the house, he noticed her car was missing from the yard, and the front door was open, with the house appearing to have been ransacked.
He later discovered a bedroom on the south-eastern side of the house was locked and, with the help of another relative, forced it open and found Sabessar lying motionless on the floor.
She was wearing a pink jersey, red Christmas-themed pyjama pants, and was barefoot. A small pool of what appeared to be blood was observed beneath her right wrist.
District Medical Officer Dr Balkissoon visited the scene, viewed the body and pronounced her dead.
Crime Scene Investigators from the Southern Division processed the scene, but no workable fingerprints were recovered.
CSI officers from the Homicide Bureau of Investigations, Region Three, also collected several items of evidence, including a swab of blood, a silver wristband and a pair of gold-coloured hoop earrings.
Police said officers identified several CCTV cameras in the area and retrieved footage as part of their investigation.
