A Barrackpore man who withdrew $29,000 to purchase a car, came home on Carnival Monday to find his stash of cash gone.
Police said Avinash Maharaj, 21, secured his home on Carnival Monday and left. When he returned six hours later, he saw a window on the northern side open.
Maharaj hurriedly went to a speaker box in his bedroom where he hid the $29,000 in cash and found it missing. A quantity of gold jewellery was also missing.
Police believe the thieves exited through a door. Officers said there was no CCTV footage available but they recovered workable fingerprints from the scene.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, another Barrackpore resident lost his car in a burglary on Carnival Monday.
Police said Amit Ramkissoon, 34, of Jaipaulsingh Road, St Croix, Barrackpore parked and locked his blue Nissan Wingroad around 8 pm in an open area in front of his residence before retiring to bed.
Around 3 am, he woke up and found his car missing. The vehicle was worth $45,000. The vehicle was not equipped with GPS making it difficult for the police to track its whereabouts. Barrackpore police are continuing investigations.
