A Bar­rack­pore man who with­drew $29,000 to pur­chase a car, came home on Car­ni­val Mon­day to find his stash of cash gone.

Po­lice said Avinash Ma­haraj, 21, se­cured his home on Car­ni­val Mon­day and left. When he re­turned six hours lat­er, he saw a win­dow on the north­ern side open.

Ma­haraj hur­ried­ly went to a speak­er box in his bed­room where he hid the $29,000 in cash and found it miss­ing. A quan­ti­ty of gold jew­ellery was al­so miss­ing.

Po­lice be­lieve the thieves ex­it­ed through a door. Of­fi­cers said there was no CCTV footage avail­able but they re­cov­ered work­able fin­ger­prints from the scene.

Mean­while, in a sep­a­rate in­ci­dent, an­oth­er Bar­rack­pore res­i­dent lost his car in a bur­glary on Car­ni­val Mon­day.

Po­lice said Amit Ramkissoon, 34, of Jaipauls­ingh Road, St Croix, Bar­rack­pore parked and locked his blue Nis­san Wingroad around 8 pm in an open area in front of his res­i­dence be­fore re­tir­ing to bed.

Around 3 am, he woke up and found his car miss­ing. The ve­hi­cle was worth $45,000. The ve­hi­cle was not equipped with GPS mak­ing it dif­fi­cult for the po­lice to track its where­abouts. Bar­rack­pore po­lice are con­tin­u­ing in­ves­ti­ga­tions.
