A mother of one, who relatives said preferred to drive along the Eastern Main Road, died in a car crash along the Beetham Highway yesterday.
Karen Joseph, 51, of Desperlie Crescent, Laventille, the owner of Surfer’s Bar, Tunapuna, was described as a “sweetbread” by her relatives. They said she was the go-to person for advice on any and everything.
Relatives who gathered at the Forensic Science Centre, St James yesterday where an autopsy was done said Joseph was on her way home around 5 am when the accident took place.
Police reports stated that Joseph’s Nissan AD wagon swerved off the road and crashed into the light pole.
Joseph, they said, was not a fast driver and would usually be on the phone with a friend, Sharon Hoyte, on her way home. It was that friend, who lives in the US, who alerted relatives about the accident.
Hoyte told the T&T Guardian they were laughing on the phone for about 11 minutes before she heard a “thud” and then silence.
Hoyte, who lives in Maryland, USA, called other friends and they went out searching for Joseph. By the time they found her car, she was already dead.
Joseph is the 103rd person to be killed in vehicular accidents for the year — ten less than the corresponding period last year.
