Beetham residents are expressing concern that improper maintenance is one of the main reasons why some parts of the area experienced devastating flood damage shortly after heavy rainfall.

Speaking to Guardian Media yesterday, Dillon Ramdhanie noted: “they ain’t self sending to clean the drain.” He said that people in the area had to hire people to clean the drains.

Ramdhanie also complained that a substance that emanated from the Angostura compound contributed to the build-up of water in the area.

He said: “By Angostura, they’re dumping out a kind of molasses that hardens with grass on it.” Ramdhanie noted that the drains in the vicinity of Angostura moving eastward towards the Vemcott river, are not being cleaned.

He also expressed disgust that his home and the homes of his neighbors were flooded with waist-high water, his vehicle was also flooded and he had to use buckets to remove the water from his home and vehicle.

On the Priority Bus route, the road was not only made impassable due to the floodwaters, but debris as well. The debris consisted of logs, plastic bottles, styrofoam and coconut shells and the San Juan river washed the debris onto the roads.

Residents living and running businesses on the main road said the river had not gotten a height like that which was witnessed yesterday in years.

Meanwhile, the residents in Beetham said that they have not heard from their MP and they did not receive sandbags.

They said had they received sandbags, they could have possibly protected their homes.
