Acting Commissioner of Police (CoP) Junior Benjamin yesterday presented a scorecard for the T&T Police Service (TTPS) which showed they had recorded a significant reduction in serious and violent crimes since the year began, compared to the same period for the past two years.
Reading from documents in front of him yesterday during a police media briefing, Benjamin applauded the hard work of officers, which he said had led to the positive results they were currently experiencing.
He said the murder count which stood at 153 up to Tuesday, represented a 33 per cent decline - compared to 228 murders in 2024, and 241 in 2023.
Decreases were also recorded in the categories of woundings and shootings which fell from 297 in 2024; to 210 in 2025. Sexual offences also saw a marginal decline from 338 in 2024, to 330 for the year.
Robberies dropped from 1,072 in 2024, to 680 in 2025; while violent crime declined by 28 per cent, from 1,991 in 2024, to 1,424 in 2025.
Praising his officers after they recorded a ten per cent increase in the recovery of illegal firearms, Benjamin said, “Last year, we had at least 267 firearms recovered around this time, and now we have over 293 firearms recovered.”
Motor Vehicle Larceny also declined from 525 in 2024 to 270 for the year thus far.
