Bishop Claude Berkley has extended congratulations to Kamla Persad-Bissessar on her appointment as Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago.
Speaking on behalf of the Anglican Church in the Diocese of Trinidad and Tobago, Bishop Berkley described her return to the post as “a significant milestone in her life of public service and leadership.”
“As she assumes the mantle of national responsibility, we pray that God will grant her the wisdom, compassion and integrity required for the task,” he said.
Persad-Bissessar’s appointment comes at what Bishop Berkley called “a pivotal juncture” in the country’s history, noting the unique moment of leadership shared among three women.
“We celebrate the achievement of this history-making female Prime Minister, second time around, working in alignment with the second female President, and with a female Opposition Leader,” he said. “We feel a sense of assurance by her commitment to justice, unity and the common good.”
He added that the Anglican community would continue to uphold the new prime minister in prayer.
“May God grant her the strength to lead with vision and courage, and may her term be one of peace, progress and upliftment for all citizens of Trinidad and Tobago,” he said.
