The body of an uniden­ti­fied man was dis­cov­ered around 11 am yes­ter­day by two men on the north­ern bank of the Ca­roni Riv­er in the vicin­i­ty of the Vish­nu Boys’ Hin­du Col­lege.

Pra­ha­l­ad Ram­pat, 63, told po­lice he was in the com­pa­ny of a fel­low vil­lager when they stum­bled up­on the body near a gate that leads to an area des­ig­nat­ed for agri­cul­ture.

Ram­pat said they had gone to look for chatainge (bread­nut fruit) for a Hin­du prayer cer­e­mo­ny known as a Ban­daara.

Ram­pat said that ini­tial­ly, they thought some­one was drunk, giv­en that it ap­peared to be a man ly­ing down in an area that is used for agri­cul­tur­al cul­ti­va­tion.

He said he no­ticed that the body was mo­tion­less and called the po­lice. Ram­pat said the body was bare­foot­ed and clothed in track pants.

The body bore chop wounds on the back of the head.

Of­fi­cers of the Ca­roni Po­lice Sta­tion were alert­ed and po­lice at­tached to the Homi­cide South Di­vi­sion are cur­rent­ly con­duct­ing in­ves­ti­ga­tions.

While res­i­dents were not com­ment­ing much on the killing, at least one woman, Mal­isha Ram­baran, told Guardian Me­dia that she felt un­safe giv­en that the crime scene was “Right here be­hind your back door.”

Po­lice are call­ing on any­one with in­for­ma­tion to con­tact the po­lice.
