High Court Judge Ronnie Boodoosingh has been elevated to the Court of Appeal.

In a press release issued yesterday morning, the Judiciary said that Boodoosingh had received his instrument of appointment from Chief Justice Ivor Archie.

Boodoosingh, who was admitted to practise as an attorney-at-law in 1992, was appointed as a judge in September 2007.

Before joining the bench, Boodoosingh served as an advocate at J. D. Sellier and Company and as a State prosecutor at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

In 2001, Boodoosingh joined the Hugh Wooding Law School, where he served as Director of Trial Advocacy and taught Ethics.

“He has conducted numerous training programmes for lawyers, law students, police officers, immigration officers, court personnel and school teachers, among others,” the release said.

Boodoosingh, who holds a Master of Laws (Merit) from the University of London, has written four books including a textbook on trial advocacy.

In 2011, Boodoosingh blocked the extradition of businessmen Ishwar Galbaransingh and Steve Ferguson, who were wanted in the United States on fraud and money laundering charges related to the construction of the Piarco International Airport.

Boodoosingh had ruled that Trinidad was the more appropriate forum for the men to be tried considering the majority of offences are alleged to have taken place in this jurisdiction.

In an unrelated case, last week, Boodoosingh upheld the ongoing public health regulations related to the COVID-19 pandemic but ruled that provisions for criminal charges for breaching guidelines for places of worship were not properly incorporated.

The regulations have since been amended to rectify the issue.

In a press release issued yesterday, President of the Assembly of Southern Lawyers Michael Rooplal congratulated Boodoosingh on his promotion.

“Justice Boodoosingh has distinguished himself as a jurist, both in practice and as a puisne judge. Moreover, through his writing and work at the Hugh Wooding Law School over the years, Justice Boodoosingh has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to legal education,” Rooplal said.
