Four men, including a 13-year-old boy, were held by several fire officers they had earlier robbed at the Sangre Grande Fire Station in the early hours yesterday.
The theft allegedly occurred between 1 am and 2.10 am.
Police said one of the victims had just completed his shift and, while packing up to leave the station, he realised his cell phone, charger, cologne, and headset were missing.
At the same time, another officer reported his phone and watch were also missing.
Alerting all the other officers present, a thorough search of the compound was carried out.
After speaking with residents living close by, one of the victims learned that several young men from the area had been seen walking around the compound.
Upon checking, a third fireman noticed the driver’s door to his van open and his phone charger, lighter, and two packs of cigarettes missing. The cafeteria of the station was also broken into. The officers contacted the Sangre Grande Police Station, and while on the way to make a formal report around 2.45 am, they were alerted by a resident that the same group of men seen at the fire station earlier was walking towards the Sangre Grande Hospital.
The fire officers stopped the group, with some immediately confessing to the theft, while two others denied any involvement.
The four suspects were later handed over to the police. — Anna-Lisa Paul
