Finance Minister Davendranath Tancoo has announced a $1 reduction in the price of Super gasoline, effective immediately.
Delivering the 2026 Budget in Parliament today, Tancoo said the move marks the first major measure of what he described as a “caring government” led by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.
“The previous PNM government has been unfairly overcharging citizens for super gasoline,” Tancoo said, adding that the cut would directly benefit all motorists.
With an average tank size of 50 litres, drivers will save about $50 each time they fill up, he added.
He contrasted the move with what he called the “glee” of the former Finance Minister, who repeatedly raised fuel prices while citizens struggled with a rising cost of living.
Tancoo said the new administration’s priority is economic fairness, declaring, “When UNC wins, everybody wins.”
He also reported that while overall economic activity contracted by 2.1 per cent in early 2025 due to global and institutional challenges, growth is returning to the non-energy sector—particularly in food and beverage manufacturing, transport, real estate, and construction.
Tancoo attributed previous declines in natural gas exploration and extraction to what he described as the “mediocre efforts” of the former government but said the outlook for non-energy industries remains positive going into 2026.
