Firefighters managed to contain a fire that spread from a nearby bushfire to the Trinidad Cement Limited (TCL) compound in Claxton Bay yesterday, preventing any significant damage.
Several people told Guardian Media they heard an explosion and saw thick smoke billowing from the scene after 11 am.
Eyewitnesses stated that the bush fire spread to four bitumen tanks on the compound, damaging the tanks and a conveyor belt. However, there were no reports of any injuries.
Firefighters from Couva and Savonetta Fire Stations responded, bringing the flames under control and fully extinguishing the fire around 4 pm. None of the buildings on the compound were damaged during the incident.
The compound is located a distance away from TCL’s main factory along the Southern Main Road.
Investigations are continuing.
