Po­lice are now re­fut­ing ear­li­er re­ports of a gun­man get­ting out of a near­by pan­el van and shoot­ing an al­leged purse snatch­er.  Po­lice now say the man, whose iden­ti­ty re­mains, un­known, tried to rob a busi­ness­man on the cor­ner of Char­lotte and Queen Street just be­fore 1 pm when the busi­ness­man pulled out his li­censed gun and shot him sev­er­al times.

One of the ban­dit's ac­com­plices ran north on Char­lotte Street through East­side Plaza, while a sec­ond ac­com­plice ran east on Queen Street, to­wards Dun­can Street.

Po­lice are con­tin­u­ing search­es for the re­main­ing ban­dits.

Sev­er­al ven­dors near­by said while they did not know the man's name, he had a rep­u­ta­tion as a chain snatch­er in the area.

Po­lice from the Port of Spain Di­vi­sion and the In­ter-Agency Task Force vis­it­ed the scene and cor­doned off Char­lotte and Queen Streets, rerout­ing traf­fic.

The scene re­mained in­ac­ces­si­ble up to 2:22 pm.
