Police are now refuting earlier reports of a gunman getting out of a nearby panel van and shooting an alleged purse snatcher. Police now say the man, whose identity remains, unknown, tried to rob a businessman on the corner of Charlotte and Queen Street just before 1 pm when the businessman pulled out his licensed gun and shot him several times.
One of the bandit's accomplices ran north on Charlotte Street through Eastside Plaza, while a second accomplice ran east on Queen Street, towards Duncan Street.
Police are continuing searches for the remaining bandits.
Several vendors nearby said while they did not know the man's name, he had a reputation as a chain snatcher in the area.
Police from the Port of Spain Division and the Inter-Agency Task Force visited the scene and cordoned off Charlotte and Queen Streets, rerouting traffic.
The scene remained inaccessible up to 2:22 pm.
This story continues to develop.
