Po­lice seized ap­prox­i­mate­ly 340 grammes of cannabis and 80 rounds of 9mm am­mu­ni­tion dur­ing an in­tel­li­gence-led op­er­a­tion in Tu­na­puna ear­ly Wednes­day morn­ing.

The op­er­a­tion was con­duct­ed by of­fi­cers of the North Cen­tral Di­vi­sion Task Force West be­tween 10 p.m. on Tues­day and 1 a.m. on Wednes­day.

Po­lice said of­fi­cers, act­ing on in­tel­li­gence, pro­ceed­ed to Up­per Tu­na­puna Road, Tu­na­puna, in the vicin­i­ty of the Black Pool Riv­er, where they con­duct­ed a search of the area.

Dur­ing the search, of­fi­cers found a clear plas­tic bag con­tain­ing the sus­pect­ed cannabis and am­mu­ni­tion be­neath a derelict ve­hi­cle lo­cat­ed off the road­way.

The items were seized and tak­en to the Tu­na­puna Po­lice Sta­tion.

Po­lice said en­quiries are con­tin­u­ing in­to the dis­cov­ery and in­ves­ti­ga­tors are work­ing to de­ter­mine who may be re­spon­si­ble for the am­mu­ni­tion and sus­pect­ed nar­cotics.

The seizure comes amid on­go­ing po­lice ef­forts to re­move il­le­gal firearms, am­mu­ni­tion and nar­cotics from com­mu­ni­ties through in­tel­li­gence-led op­er­a­tions.

No ar­rests were re­port­ed in con­nec­tion with the seizure up to press time.

Po­lice have con­tin­ued to urge mem­bers of the pub­lic to pro­vide in­for­ma­tion on il­le­gal weapons and drugs in their com­mu­ni­ties as part of ef­forts to tack­le crime.

The am­mu­ni­tion seized was iden­ti­fied as 9mm rounds, a type com­mon­ly used in sev­er­al hand­guns and oth­er firearms.

In­ves­ti­ga­tors are ex­pect­ed to con­duct fur­ther checks on the am­mu­ni­tion as part of their en­quiries.

Po­lice did not pro­vide fur­ther de­tails about the op­er­a­tion or say whether the dis­cov­ery was linked to any on­go­ing in­ves­ti­ga­tion.

The seized items re­main in po­lice cus­tody as en­quiries con­tin­ue.
