Community-Based Environmental Protection and Enhancement Programme (Cepep) CEO Keith Eddy is commending his workers, saying they have once again delivered on their commitment to keeping Port-of-Spain clean, after they ensured that the city was free of any remnants of Carnival celebrations by midnight on Ash Wednesday.
Partnering with the National Carnival Commission (NCC) and the Port-of-Spain City Corporation, Cepep deployed 35 contractors and approximately 1,050 workers to maintain the Queen’s Park Savannah, the parade route, and downtown Port-of-Spain throughout the Carnival weekend. Clean-up efforts covered key areas, including St James, Mucurapo Road, St Clair Avenue, Tragarete Road, and Woodbrook.
Eddy, in a release issued yesterday, said he inspected the clean-up shortly after midnight and commended the dedication of the team.
“Every year, this spectacular team provides extraordinary national service by sacrificing their vacation while others relax or party,” he said.
“They work through the early morning, the blazing midday sun, and the night to complete this massive clean-up. We succeeded in record time, and I am proud and grateful for this amazing team,” Eddy said.
During the clean-up, workers reportedly collected approximately 25,120 bags of garbage.
Meanwhile, the Port-of-Spain City Corporation also acknowledged the work of the Downtown Carnival Committee, chaired by councillor Clint Baptiste, as well as the Port-of-Spain City Police Service, the T&T Police Service, the T&T Fire Service, and the REACT Team for their roles in ensuring safety and order.
Performers such as Blaka Dan (Ultimate Soca Champion), Preedy (Freestyle Monarch), Iwer George, and Yung Bredda (Third place in Calypso Monarch) contributed to the celebration.
In a statement, the Office of the Mayor of Port-of-Spain thanked all those involved in making Downtown Carnival and the subsequent clean-up a success.
“Thank you to all who contributed to making this Downtown Carnival and clean-up a shining example of what can be achieved when we work together.”
