Chaguanas Chamber of Industry and Commerce president Baldath Maharaj has described yesterday’s fire in Chase Village as a troubling development for the wider business community in Central Trinidad.
In a statement, Maharaj said he was deeply concerned about both the immediate and medium-term impact of the blaze, which destroyed a section of RS Imports Wholesale Warehouse 2000 building and disrupted several businesses.
“The operations there represent years of investment, entrepreneurship and livelihoods. Within a single morning, many small and medium-sized businesses may have lost their physical assets, inventory and, in some cases, their sole source of income,” he said.
Maharaj warned that beyond the structural damage, the fire is likely to result in job losses at a time when businesses are already grappling with rising costs and economic challenges.
“At a time when businesses are facing increasing pressures, incidents like this can be devastating,” he added.
He expressed sympathy for those affected, noting that the chamber’s thoughts are with business owners, employees and their families.
He also commended the the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service for containing the blaze and preventing further damage, while noting that no injuries have been reported.
Maharaj said the incident highlights broader issues surrounding fire safety infrastructure, emergency preparedness and insurance coverage within commercial spaces.
He added that the Chamber stands ready to assist affected businesses through advocacy, coordination with relevant authorities and facilitating access to relief and recovery resources.
“In times like this, the strength of our business community is tested. I have no doubt that, with the right support, these entrepreneurs will rebuild—but they should not have to do it alone,” Maharaj said.
