China’s new ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago, Ren Hongyan, hosted his first official event on Wednesday, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.
At a reception at the Chinese Embassy in Maraval, Ren noted that during World War II, T&T played an important role as an allied logistics base and later became “among the first Caribbean nations to achieve independence in the post-war era.”
“It was also among the first Caribbean nations to achieve independence in the post-war era, and has long spoken out on behalf of those who suffered from colonialism,” he said.
Ren, joined by Deputy Permanent Secretary (Ag.) Erica Fortune of the Ministry of Foreign and Caricom Affairs, reaffirmed China’s readiness to deepen cooperation with T&T in areas such as trade, culture, ecology, security, renewable energy and technology.
