Come September, there could be more measures in place to examine people applying for the first issue of their driver’s permit.

This is according to Transport Commissioner Clive Clarke who is hoping that vehicles with recording devices will be ready for the road in the next quarter so that driving instructors will have an improved testing system.

This was a promise made by Works and Transport Minister Rohan Sinanan two years ago.

At the time, Sinanan said the Transport division would have been furnished with their own vehicles for driving tests equipped with recording devices to end the illegal practice of people paying for their licences.

Speaking to Guardian Media via telephone yesterday, Clarke said in the first instance, there would be four new vehicles for Class three (light motor vehicles) drivers.

Clarke said, “It is something I want to bring on board before September ... Those vehicles will be equipped with 360 degree cameras so we can identify the surroundings, including recording the driving test. It will also be equipped with GPS so we could go back and replay exactly where the vehicle would have traversed during the time of the driving test.”

He added, “Currently that matter is in the procurement stage right now and it is receiving the attention of the ministry and from my understanding from an update this morning (Tuesday), the agency that is doing the procurement for us they are currently doing evaluations.”

Efforts to contact Minister Sinanan yesterday were unsuccessful.
