Investigations are being carried out into an attempt to extort a Claxton Bay businessman, whose children and business were threatened if he refused to pay the money as demanded.
The 47-year-old owner of an import business at Southern Main Road in Claxton Bay reportedly received a WhatsApp message around 11.13 pm on Sunday, in which the sender demanded $100,000.
The sender threatened the victim that he would be unable to open his business, and that his son and daughter would both be harmed if he refused or failed to pay up.
Later that night, around 11.45 pm, the owner heard several loud explosions and contacted the police.
Officers visited the victim’s home and found four spent 9 mm shell casings on the roadway in front of the house.
