A police officer has been placed on seven days’ injury leave after he was struck by a stone thrown by a mentally ill man in Couva on Wednesday night.
Police said the officer responded to a report of a disturbance at Carolina Village and was asked to assist ambulance workers at 11 pm.
When he arrived, he was told the man had been throwing stones. The man, an outpatient of St Ann’s Psychiatric Hospital, had not taken his medication and was acting violently.
One of the stones struck the officer on the back of his head. He received three stitches at the Couva Health Facility.
Officers, along with the man’s brother, subdued him and secured him in an ambulance, which took him to the San Fernando General Hospital.
Elderly woman, 76, beaten and robbed of $12
A 76-year-old El Socorro woman was beaten and robbed by bandits who stormed her home on Thursday morning.
Police said the woman was preparing lunch at her Ward Lane home around 11 am when two men walked inside.
One of the men picked up a kitchen knife from the counter and pointed it at the elderly woman, while the other held her by the neck.
They tied her hands, struck her about the face and body, and ransacked the house before cutting the cables to her DVR system and fleeing with $12 in cash, a pair of earrings, a gold bracelet, and a chain.
Bandits lure victims advertising Tiida
for sale
Two men from Maloney and Piarco were robbed on Thursday afternoon by bandits who advertised a Nissan Tiida for sale in Barataria.
Police said the men, aged 32 and 44, responded to a Facebook Marketplace advertisement and were led to Ninth Avenue to meet someone claiming to have the vehicle.
When they reached a dead end, three bandits, one of whom was armed with a gun, confronted them.
The men were ordered to lie on the road, and their mobile phones and wallets were stolen.
The bandits also took a Nissan Wingroad belonging to one of the victims and escaped in the stolen car.
Officers from the Morvant Police Station are investigating the matter with support from the Cyber Crime Unit.
