Tobago investigators are awaiting a forensic pathologist from Trinidad to confirm the official cause of death of 74-year-old Frank Alan Sandy, who was shot in Mt St George last week.
Police reports said the pensioner was shot around 5 am last Friday when he tried to enter the home of an off-duty police officer. The officer allegedly became fearful and fired three times. Sandy’s relatives said he had memory issues and may have gotten lost after leaving home for a walk that morning. They criticised the officer’s use of force.
Police have confirmed that the officer involved remains on duty.
Snr Supt Earl Elie explained to Guardian Media that an officer will only be removed from active duty if his presence will hamper the investigation or if the incident interferes with the officer’s ability to perform.
Meanwhile, the officer’s relatives said they are now living in fear—after waking up early Sunday morning to find someone attempting to burn down their Mt St George home.
Since then, tensions in the community have escalated.
On Sunday morning, the officer’s relatives awoke to find someone had attempted to set fire to their home. Flames were ignited outside the top floor of the two-storey house, where several relatives, including children and a senior citizen, were asleep. The officer lives downstairs. His mother noticed the fire and managed to extinguish it before it could spread.
The family claimed the arson attempt was fueled by misinformation and anger over the shooting, and said the house had already been the target of multiple attempted break-ins in recent weeks.
The family has since extended sympathy to Sandy’s loved ones.
ACP Oswain Subero said the investigation is ongoing.
A separate probe has also been launched into the suspected arson.
