Two people narrowly escaped death when the vehicle in which they were travelling burst into flames early Wednesday morning.
Up to midday yesterday, Michael Morgan, 40, of Upper St Francois Valley Road, Belmont and Ariel James, 22, of Old Road Morvant remained warded in serious conditions at the San Fernando General Hospital.
Investigators said around 5 am, Morgan was driving his Mitsubishi Mirage south along the Sir Solomon Hochoy Highway, when the vehicle skidded near the Gasparillo Overpass.
It then crashed into several of the supporting iron posts of the crash barriers on the western side of the southbound carriageway. Witnesses said the posts sent the car into a tailspin and it hit a concrete pillar on the west of the southbound flyover.
Just before it burst into flames, Morgan and James were able to crawl out of the wreck. A party of officers from the Gasparillo Police Station and the St Margaret Police Station which included WP Ag Cpl Hepburn, PC Khan and PC Seepaul responded. Fire Officers led by Ag FSSO Arrindell arrived a short while later and extinguished the fire.
Morgan and James were rushed to the San Fernando General Hospital where they received emergency attention.
Investigations are continuing.
