A Couva man died from gunshot injuries following an alleged shootout with Central Division police at his home on Monday.
A report stated that around 11.45 am, the Central Division Task Force - South and Central Division Gang Unit received information about illegal firearms at a house in Couva.
The officers then went to Grant Street Extension and met Kiel Williams at home.
Officers identified themselves and told Williams they had a warrant to search the premises.
They advised Williams to secure his valuables before the search began.
However, the officers claimed they saw him walk into a bedroom and pull an object resembling a rifle from under a bed. He then emerged from the room and pointed it at them. The officers reported hearing several loud explosions.
The officers returned fire at Williams. He fell to the floor, bleeding from the chest. The officers rendered aid before taking him to the Couva District Health Facility.
Medical staff attended to Williams, but he later died of his injuries.
Supt Montrichard, ASP Ablacksingh, Insp Doodnath and Insp Sylvan, Sgt Persad and Cpl Ramadhin led other Central Division officers to process the scene and started an investigation.
